Injured bear tranquilized after roaming around Concord neighborhood

CONCORD, N.C. — An injured bear was tranquilized Thursday after roaming around a Concord neighborhood.

In home surveillance video, the bear could be seen dragging its right leg as it limped down the driveway of a home on Braeburn Road in the Carriage Downs neighborhood.

Neighbors called animal control officers around 7:45 a.m. after spotting the bear as kids were getting on the school bus.

They said the bear went from home to home, stretching several blocks.

“We think we have an injured animal that may not be really happy,” said neighbor Missy DeSouza.

When officers got there, they said they found the animal but were unable to catch it because it ran back into the woods.

The bear was eventually found in a drainage pipe and was tranquilized by animal biologists from Stanly and Montgomery County.

Wildlife officers said the bear's right knee is injured and it will be treated at a zoo in Asheboro.

There have been several bear sightings in the last few weeks.

Residents spotted a bear earlier this month roaming around neighborhoods in east Mecklenburg County.
