Investigators reconstructing wrong-way crash in Granite Falls

GRANITE FALLS, N.C. — Police are reconstructing a wrong-way crash along Highway 321 in Granite Falls that sent two people to the hospital.

Granite Falls police and officers from Lenoir are going over the crash scene. They are trying to get a better estimate of the speed the vehicles were going when they hit head-on in the northbound lanes.

Police said 65-year-old Judy McCurry was heading south in the northbound lanes when she struck a minivan, knocking it off the roadway around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

McCurry was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Police said right now, she is in stable but serious condition at the hospital.

The driver of the minivan had only minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.

Investigators said they are not only collecting evidence from the crash scene but are also trying to determine what led McCurry to drive the wrong way. They plan on talking with people at businesses nearby to see if it’s possible she was in one of the businesses prior to the accident.

Officers don't believe she was heading the wrong way for very long. The first call they got was after the crash happened.
