IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — The Iredell County Health Department said a man with the parasite cryptosporidium swam in the Statesville and Troutman YMCA pools, along with the Larkin Golf Club's pool.
The pools have since reopened, but families told Channel 9 they never heard about the health scare.
Families were swimming in the pool at the Barium Springs YMCA in Statesville on Saturday.
Danielle Noland, who took her two grandchildren swimming, said she made phone calls to find out what happened after a local swimmer was infected with a parasite.
When they wanted to swim a couple days ago, the pool was closed.
“They wanted to make sure they took precautions,” Noland said. “Could have gotten a proactive email instead. That would have been cool.”
Before being diagnosed, the infected patient visited three local pools.
In addition to swimming in the three pools, the patient also visited Lake Norman.
The Iredell County Health Department said it doesn't know where the swimmer caught the parasite, but it asked the three pools to close and disinfect as a precaution.
“These guys are learning how to swim and they swallow water,” Noland said.
Health experts said swallowing water is how someone can become infected.
The health department said chlorine levels in most pools are not high enough to kill parasites.
All of the impacted pools cooperated with the health department and are now considered safe for swimming.
