TROUTMAN, N.C. — Some Iredell-Statesville students will attend different schools beginning next year as the district prepares to open two new campuses and address overcrowding. School leaders say the changes come as Iredell County’s population is expected to grow by more than 50% by 2050.
Channel 9’s Erika Jackson spoke with Iredell-Statesville district leaders and parents about the shift.
Growth in Iredell County is booming.
Research from the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance found the county’s population is expected to grow by more than 50% by 2050.
April Wille has lived in Iredell County for the past decade. She’s noticed the changes in her daughter’s school.
Parkertown Elementary School is one of two schools under construction to help ease overcrowding at nearby schools. Both are expected to open for the 2027-28 school year.
Mark Shinkaruk is the chief operations officer for Iredell-Statesville Schools.
The school board approved new redistricting plans last week.
Starting next school year, some students from South Iredell and Lake Norman high schools will attend the new Weathers Creek High School.
Some students from Troutman, Shepherd and Coddle Creek elementary schools will move to the new Parkertown Elementary School.
Those students come from schools that are at or near capacity, which means some children will walk new hallways alongside new classmates.
Wille believes it’s a small sacrifice that will make a big difference for students.
ISS will also have the following changes for next school year with the new redistricting lines:
- Some students from East Iredell Elementary School will be sent to Cool Springs Elementary.
- Some Coddle Creek students will be sent to Woodland Heights Elementary.
- Some students at Lake Norman High School will move to the South Iredell District.
