CHERRYVILLE, N.C. — A judge raised a convicted sex offender's bond to $500,000 on Thursday afternoon.
Jonathan Corry is accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home, beating her with a flashlight and raping her.
Police said the man passed out during the four-hour ordeal. While he was sleeping, the woman reached into his pocket to grab his phone and call for help.
The woman used to date Corry. They broke up nine months ago.
On New Year's Eve, she said he came to her home just south of downtown Cherryville and knocked on her door.
When she opened it, she said he hit her on the head with a metal flashlight.
Police said Corry then raped her and beat her so badly some of her teeth were knocked out.
"When she said he started snoring, she was able to obtain the cellphone out of his pants pocket," said Detective Mark Stout with Cherryville Police Department.
The woman whispered on the call to 911, "I opened the door and he hit me in the face with a flashlight and stuff and I'm bleeding."
She tried to keep quiet.
"He is still here and he is passed out," the woman said on the call.
Police said Corry woke up before police arrived and used his hand to cover her mouth when they knocked at the door.
She yelled as loud as could.
"They could hear some muffled sounds. They could hear a woman somewhat distressed," Stout said.
When they opened the unlocked door, they said Corry was inside chasing the woman.
They arrested him and praised her for making the call.
"If we had not received that call, I don't know what would have happened. It would have been a bad situation," Stout said.
If Corry posts his half-million-dollar bond, he will have to wear an electronic bracelet. He served four years in prison for second-degree rape in Cleveland County in 1991.
