Last day of early voting brings crowds to Charlotte polling sites

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The last day of early voting could be one for the record books.

The Mecklenburg County Board of Elections said it was very busy for the last day of early voting.

It said about 2,500 people were voting per hour Saturday.

When it was 30 degrees in Charlotte, some voters waited for the doors to open at 7 a.m. at a polling site in University City.

"We waited about 45 minutes," voters Della and Steven Hammond said. "Early voting is essential because everybody's rushing at the last moment and we don't want to do that."

All around Charlotte, Channel 9 found long lines for a midterm election during the last day of early voting.

The site coordinator for the Beatties Ford early voting location Donna Greenwood said when she opened the doors Saturday morning, the line stretched all the way down the sidewalk, around the corner, onto another sidewalk, and out onto Beatties Ford Road.

"This midterm compared to others is huge," Greenwood said. "We've had a very huge showing of voters."

"The lines weren't as long, but there was still so many people out there and it was awesome to see," voter Fallon Moretz said.

In Mecklenburg County, where a few thousand people voted early, Eyewitness News Anchor Blaine Tolison said he still found optimism at the polls for more unity.

"We can work together and move this nation, move this country, move this city, this state in the right direction," one voter said.
