Lawsuit: Wife of former high school coach claims CMS fired husband over disability

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The wife of a former high school football coach is suing the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District in federal court, claiming the district broke the law by firing her husband for his disability.

Scott Young was the head coach at Independence High School for about three months in 2016 and for much of that time, he was in the hospital.

The lawsuit claims Young was hired on May 5 and parents at the school raised concerns about Young's health as soon as he was hired. Young assured parents he was fine, but said he may need to take time off if he was cleared for a transplant.

A few weeks after being hired, Young had a heart transplant and was in the hospital for 49 days before returning to work on July 15.

Channel 9 was there as Young watched his first game after returning to work from the sidelines in a wheelchair.

The lawsuit states parents continued to complain about Young's health, so he held another meeting to address their concerns, but was fired on Aug. 12 -- just one week later.

Young has since died, so his wife filed the lawsuit on his behalf.

Channel 9 reached out to CMS for a response to the lawsuit, but have not heard back.
