CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three people were taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after a traffic stop led officers to swarm a southeast Charlotte neighborhood, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.
Just after 2:15 p.m., officers said they got a hit on a stolen car near the intersection of Reagan Drive and West Sugar Creek Road.
They tried to stop the car, but the driver took off. A police helicopter followed the vehicle for several miles.
Witnesses said the vehicle police were following lost control and hit a cab near the intersection of Monroe Road and Idlewild Road.
The cab driver is the mother of a 1-year-old girl.
Her husband, who was home with the child, ran over to check on her after hearing about the crash.
They are immigrants from Ethiopia, and her first words to him were in their native tongue.
He asked us not to show his face.
“Somebody hit my car. Right now, she have pain in the back and her leg, hand,” he said.
The cab driver went to the hospital but is expected to be OK. Her injuries are minor.
Police said three people ran from the car following the crash.
Chopper 9 Skyzoom was overhead as officers swarmed Cedars East Court in a nearby neighborhood. We saw two people taken into custody outside a home.
Police said three people have been detained.
