CHARLOTTE — With inflation squeezing consumers and the holiday season in full swing, a recent analysis by Charlotte-based LendingTree finds an increasing number of people picking up “side hustles.”

LendingTree surveyed nearly 2,100 U.S. consumers in November and found that 44% of those responding have side jobs or gig work, up 13% from last year, according to the company’s report.

Many of them are doing it out of necessity. The survey found 71% of those with side hustles are uncertain about whether they could make ends meet financially without the extra income — which averages $473 monthly, or about $5,700 per year.
