Lenoir man turns self in, charged with involuntary manslaughter

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A Caldwell County man has been indicted and charged with involuntary manslaughter after the sheriff’s office said he accidentally shot and killed a man.

Matthew Steven Phillips, 29, of Lenoir, was cleaning his gun when he accidentally shot 26-year-old Jaron Odell Soots on Sept. 10, 2016.

Soots was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Phillips turned himself in to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday and was placed under a $10,000 secured bond.
