Letter writer to Islamic Center: ‘No problem killing Muslims'

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Leaders at Charlotte’s Islamic Center said someone sent them a hateful and frightening letter. Now, the group is asking the FBI for help.

The director the Islamic Center said he is concerned about the safety of his community. The letter he received earlier this month is full of racial slurs.

“We have to take every threat seriously,” said Jibril Hough, the center’s director.

The one-page letter uses a racially derogatory term usually directed at blacks to describe Muslims and mocks them. The letter also talks about a plan to deny Muslims resources by “terminating Muslim employment from our companies.”

At the end of the letter, the writer said she has “no problem killing Muslims” if they try to retaliate.

The letter was signed and sent from the town of Apex, N.C.

“Claiming that they have no problem killing us, legally, what does that mean? Killing us if we retaliate?” asked Hough.

Hough said he met with FBI agents Monday to discuss the letter in the hopes they decide to investigate.

“This is not as much anti-Muslim as it is anti-American,” he said.

A spokeswoman with the FBI issued a statement that said, “We are aware of the situation, and everything about the letter is not as it appears.”

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officials said they are investigating the letter, but wanted to be clear that no specific threat was made in the letter against the center.

Therefore, no crime had taken place.
