Deputies: Parent punched driver's ed teacher after tardy student not allowed in class

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A Lincoln County parent is accused of punching a driver's education teacher who refused to allow his child into class after showing up late.

The West Lincoln High School teacher said he had just started taking attendance Saturday when 36-year-old Justin Ray started banging on his classroom door because he wouldn't allow a student in after class had already started.

The teacher said he explained that school policy does not allow anyone to enter the class after 8 a.m., but Ray got angry and started punching him in the head.

Officials said Ray left the school, but was later charged with one misdemeanor count each of assault on a school employee, communicating threats, injury to personal property and disorderly conduct at a school.

The teacher suffered facial injuries and his glasses were broken, but he is expected to be OK.
