Among them was Carl Batts, a Hurricane Katrina survivor who said he’s not taking any chances.

More than 360 people slept in Charlotte-area shelters Thursday night, including 55 at East Mecklenburg High School.

Volunteers unloaded supplies in preparation for more evacuees.

Three additional, local Red Cross shelters will be open Friday night.

Batts, who moved to Charlotte from New Orleans in 2015, has a message for anyone on the fence about staying or leaving.

"The weather can change up on you and they can predict it, but they don't know when,” Batts said. “We got caught up like that in Katrina."
