Local emergency shelters plan for hundreds of hurricane evacuees

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hundreds of people are taking shelter from Hurricane Florence in Mecklenburg County.

Five Charlotte-Mecklenburg high schools have been turned into emergency shelters.

About 25 people stayed Thursday night at South Mecklenburg High School, which is one of a dozen emergency shelters open across the Charlotte area.

Among them was Carl Batts, a Hurricane Katrina survivor who said he’s not taking any chances.

More than 360 people slept in Charlotte-area shelters Thursday night, including 55 at East Mecklenburg High School.

Volunteers unloaded supplies in preparation for more evacuees.

Three additional, local Red Cross shelters will be open Friday night.

Batts, who moved to Charlotte from New Orleans in 2015, has a message for anyone on the fence about staying or leaving.

"The weather can change up on you and they can predict it, but they don't know when,” Batts said. “We got caught up like that in Katrina."
