CHINA GROVE, N.C. — North Carolina’s economic investment committee approved incentives today for a 1.4 million-square-foot Macy’s Inc. distribution center that calls for an investment of $584 million.

The facility is expected to be fully operational in 2024 and will account for almost 30% of the company’s digital supply-chain capacity. The job creation is expected to include around 2,500 full-time positions, county documents state, along with additional seasonal and part-time positions.
“For Rowan County, this would be the largest project that we’ve had in our history,” Rowan EDC President Rod Crider said.
Crews are clearing out trees and flattening the land along the I-85/Highway 152 corridor.
The facility will employ nearly 2,800 workers, which is about 75% more than the total number of residents who live in China Grove.
“I want to maintain the reputation as being a small town,” Mayor Charles Seaford said. “Macy’s is going to be on the outskirts on our town.”
