CHESTER COUNTY, N.C. — A man accused of murdering a woman back in 1976 pleaded guilty in court Tuesday.

Charles Coleman was charged with the rape and murder of Elizabeth Ann Howell Wilson.

Detectives said she went missing after going to work at the Eureka Plant of Spring Mills in Chester. Later, officers found her body in Fairfield County.

They said she had been sexually assaulted, beaten and strangled.

SLED had worked the case for years and was able to identify Coleman through DNA evidence.

Jury selection in his trial was supposed to start Tuesday, but Coleman pleaded guilty to the murder in exchange for prosecutors dropping the rape charge against him.

Coleman was sentenced to life in prison, but under 1976 laws, her will be eligible for parole in 10 years.
