Man accused of stabbing driver who stopped to help him on Mint Hill road

MINT HILL, N.C. — Police arrested a man in connection with a bizarre assault in Mint Hill Wednesday evening and neighbors said he's been a problem for years.

Officers said they responded just after 5 p.m. to what they thought was an accident on Thompson Road, but was actually an assault.

According to officials, Brian Robinson's car was on the side of the road, and he stabbed a man who stopped to help him.

The victim was seriously injured and is still in the hospital.

Robinson was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon, but posted bond within a few hours.

A judge then raised his bail from $50,000 to $500,000 after a prosecutor told the judge that it's dangerous for him to walk free.

Wednesday's incident isn't Robinson's first run-in with Mint Hill police. People living along Thompson Road said he's terrorized the community for years.

Police said they've arrested him before, but haven't been able to keep him off the street.

"There're other processes in the judicial system," Mint Hill Police Capt. John Rowell said. "That unfortunately ends ours. We don't have any say in bonds, prosecution or anything like that."

In May, Robinson was caught on camera angrily confronting a neighbor.

Robinson is back in custody and prosecutors said they are trying to get a judge to order a psychological evaluation.
