Police: Man charged with murder in Morganton triple homicide

MORGANTON, N.C. — The man police arrested in connection with a triple homicide in Morganton last month made his first court appearance Thursday morning.

Authorities arrested Donald Kincaid Wednesday night in connection with the murders in August in Morganton.

Channel 9 learned that Kincaid was dating one of the victims and is also the one who called 911 the morning of the murders.

Kincaid had nothing to say to Channel 9 as he was led into the magistrate’s office Wednesday night, where he was officially charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Barbara Johnson.

Kincaid was brought into the courtroom Thursday in a wheelchair and he was on oxygen.

A grand jury will hear evidence against him for the murder of Johnson's son Freddie Thompson, and her best friend Zakiya Bey.

According to search warrants, paramedics called police the morning of the homicides on August 10 after finding Kincaid with blood on his face and out of breath.

Inside the home, officers discovered three people dead, including Kincaid's girlfriend Johnson, her son Thompson and family friend Bey.

Investigators said all three died from blunt-force trauma and court documents said officers found clear signs of a struggle.

Police said Kincaid told them "one thing led to another" after he saw his girlfriend dancing with another man.

Since the killings, Kincaid has been hospitalized. As he was led into the magistrate's office Wednesday night, he was wearing a hospital gown.

Court documents said he had serious injuries to his right side and what appeared to be bite marks the morning of the killings.

"We're glad this is resolved. Hopefully this gives some peace to the families of the victims," said Major Mark Bradshaw with Morganton Public Safety.

Thursday in court, Kincaid said he wanted a court appointed attorney. His provisional attorney filed a motion for immediate hospitalization, stating Kincaid was on life support for a week, suffered pneumonia and is not well.

The judge signed off on that, so Kincaid was on his way to a hospital in Raleigh.

He is scheduled to have a probable cause hearing on September 24.
