Man leads police on 100 mph chase down Highway 321

A chase that ended in a crash Thursday led to a manhunt through some woods in Maiden.
Detectives in Hildebrand were talking to a person reporting his motorcycle stolen when someone riding the stolen motorcycle went by the man's house.

MAIDEN, N.C. — Detectives pursued Barry L. McMahan, 23, in the chase that ended when the end went down this dead-end road in Maiden.

He said McMahan tried to get away because police tried to run him over.
Investigators said he hit a detective's SUV driving through neighbors’ yards.
Officers said that at least two times, he exceeded 100 mph while speeding down Highway 321.
They said they continued the pursuit because McMahan was reckless, and were worried he may hurt someone.
McMahan wrecked while trying to drive down a bumpy, dirt road.
"I think it's good luck for us and the victim for somebody that's got a history, from what I understand," Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant said.
McMahan had a concealed High Point 9 mm pistol when he was arrested.

McMahan was charged with:

  • Assault with a deadly weapon on law enforcement
  • Damage to personal property
  • Flee to elude arrest
  • Larceny of motor vehicle
  • Possession of stolen motor vehicle
  • Carrying concealed weapon

He is being held under a $135,000 secured bond.
