Whitby is well known in the bodybuilding community and has ties to several gyms in Fort Mill and the Charlotte area.
Channel 9 talked to Whitby's sister, Kaily, by phone about her brother's incredible story of survival.
"He basically was praying the entire time. It was all through prayer that he was OK. He said just watching things happen, he just braced himself and was like, 'If this is my time to go, let it be. If it's not, let me be OK,'" Kaily Whitby said.
The viral photo of the crash shows two semitrailers sandwiching what's left of his crumbled truck. Only Kaleb's face is visible.
It's a photo Kaily saw for the first time last night.
"I broke down. It was crazy. I couldn't believe he was okay and that he could walk away from that. He was fine," Kaily said.
Just six months ago, Kaleb left Fort Mill to move back to work on his family's Washington farm.
Kaily said the morning of the crash started like any other. Kaleb was driving to Idaho to pick up cattle, but never made it.
"He said 'Oh, I'll see you guys later!' And just left. I don't think any of us had any clue that this could happen, but it happened, and he's OK," she said.
Kaleb was driving along I-84 in Oregon when ice made conditions dangerous. Twenty vehicles, mostly semi-trucks, were involved in at least three separate crashes. Twelve people were injured.
Miraculously, Kaleb was able to walk away with just cuts to his finger and a bruised eye.
He spoke to ABC over the phone about his experience.
"The more I think about all the things that could have happened, it kind of scares me. So, I just thank my lucky stars, that it's OK and that I'm able to come home to my wife and son," Kaleb said.
Kaily credits her brother's survival to prayer. She says at that moment, he put his life in God's hands.
"He knows he was saved for a reason. Now he just has to figure out what that is," Kaily said.
