Police search for people who may have been victimized by man impersonating officer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte police officers were called to a crash Friday on East W.T. Harris Boulevard, and what they encountered was puzzling.

When they arrived, they saw a man wearing what appeared to be official FBI clothing directing traffic around the wreck.

Police said Adolph Jones told them he was an FBI agent from South Carolina, but they soon discovered he was an imposter.

Jones was arrested and charged with impersonating a police officer.

"Well, this one was so brazen and blatant," CMPD Capt. Brad Koch said.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department released new pictures of the items they said they found inside Jones’ car.

Police said he had things like an AR-15, tactical gear and handcuffs.

They said he was driving a dark blue Chevrolet Impala with dark tinted windows, a police-style computer inside and red and blue police lights.

"What his intentions were, really can't say at this point," CMPD Lt. Allen Greene said.

Police want to know if he harassed any citizens in Charlotte.

“At this point and time, we don't know if he's approached anyone in Charlotte and presented himself as a law enforcement officer and taken any action,” Greene said.

Jones had a casual conversation with officers at the scene of the crash.

"In the duration of this conversation, figured out something is not adding up here," Greene said.

Channel 9 went to Jones’ home and asked about the alleged crime.

“I ain't got no comment on that," Jones said.

Police said anyone who believes they were victimized by Jones or has information about this case should call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
