Man sentenced for beating man to death with metal car jack

Nathan Alexander Vasquez

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A Hudson man was sentenced Monday in Caldwell County Superior Court to serve more than two decades in prison following his conviction for second-degree murder.

Nathan Alexander Vasquez, 25, was sentenced to 20 to 25 years following a no-contest plea for the March 28, 2015, beating death of 34-year-old Marcus Alexander Devlin at his apartment.

Devlin’s mother said she remembered him as a loving brother and son before Vasquez offered an apology to the victim’s family prior to his sentencing.

Vasquez beat Devlin to death with a metal car jack handle when he discovered that his former girlfriend was involved in a relationship with the victim,” the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office investigation indicated.

The night before the beating, Vasquez repeatedly texted and called the woman while searching for her in Caldwell and Catawba counties before finding her car parked at Devlin’s residence.

The woman told investigators she went to the apartment door and opened it slightly when she heard Vasquez pull up in his vehicle outside the apartment. Vasquez pushed his way inside while swinging the jack, officials said. He repeatedly hit Devlin after he slumped to the floor.

Devlin died from blunt force trauma to multiple locations on the body, according to the autopsy.
