Man wanted by police found in apartment attic crawl space

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. — A 32-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after officials said he barricaded himself inside an apartment off East Charlotte Avenue in Mount Holly.

Authorities said Steven Shaffer was previously charged with a probation violation and didn’t show up for court.

Mount Holly police responded to the Century Plaza Apartments twice Tuesday.

The first time was because of a domestic dispute, which was when police figured out Shaffer, who was involved in the argument, had outstanding warrants. Shaffer was not at the apartment when the police arrived.

Shaffer’s father, Darrell Shaffer, called the police at 12:44 p.m. to turn in his son.

Police eventually found Shaffer, who they said was hiding in an attic crawl space at the apartment building.

No one was injured.

Shaffer was convicted of manufacturing meth in 2017, which was why he was on probation.

Additional charges are pending.
