LINCOLNTON, N.C. — A local man wanted on outstanding warrants has been captured Monday following a vehicle chase.
Lincoln County sheriff's deputies observed a vehicle run through a stop sign and take off at a high speed.
Deputies said they recognized the vehicle to be the car of James William Canipe, II, 25, of Vale, N.C. and they pursued.
They said Canipe turned onto several streets and finally a dead end road where the car struck a parked vehicle.
Deputies said he jumped from the vehicle and ran into a wooded area.
Deputies detained a female passenger who told officers she pleaded with Canipe to let her out of the vehicle but he told her no and continued to hold her against her will.
Cleveland County was notified and responded with a K-9 unit that located Canipe and officers took him into custody.
Police said no one was injured during the incident.
Canipe is charged with the following:
- One felony count of fleeing to elude arrest.
- One felony count of 2nd degree kidnapping.
- One misdemeanor count of false imprisonment.
- Misdemeanor resist.
- Delay and obstruct a public officer.
- Failure to stop for a siren.
- Four counts of probation violation.
- Driving while license revoked.
- Hit and run property damage.
- Possession of drug paraphernalia.
- Conspiracy.
- Felony possession of a firearm.
- Common law false imprisonment.
- Careless and reckless driving.
- Fictitious name or address on license.
Police said he was placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center without bond. He has a first appearance set for Tuesday in Lincoln County District Court.
