Mapping out plans for growth in University City area

CHARLOTTE — While Charlotte has been grappling with its vision for guiding the city’s growth and development overall, so has a major submarket been mapping out plans of its own. A Vision Plan released this week by University City Partners outlines a number of goals for that area, which is Charlotte’s second-largest employment center, according to an executive summary.

Goals include building out a town center around the Lynx Blue Line station at JW Clay Boulevard, improving access to the Mallard Creek and Toby Creek greenways and enhancing the lakefront area to create community spaces.

The town center would be at the intersection of what UCP is calling an “Urban Axis,” running north-south along the light-rail line, with an east-west “Greenbelt” that connects the UNC Charlotte campus to the nearby University Research Park.
