CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A massive tree that fell in Madison Park in south Charlotte showed no signs of decay.
Tree experts said it did not raise any alarms in yearly inspection.
The tree crushed a vehicle.
Trees like that one are more than 80 years old, but it’s difficult to predict when they will fall.
"For the most part, we don't have an easy way to X-ray trees, so we don't know what's going on with the root system, the structure or where the failure is going to occur," said Eric Schmidhausler, with Bartlett Tree Experts.
It helps to focus on fertilizing old trees, which need it as much as younger ones.
That often gets overlooked, tree experts said.
