MATTHEWS, N.C. — Police are investigating after five people were injured in a crash that shut down the inner loop of Interstate 485 in Matthews Tuesday morning.
The wreck happened just after 8:30 a.m. along the I-485 inner loop just before East John Street.

Authorities have not said what led up to the collision, but MEDIC said five people were injured.
One person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and four others suffered serious injuries, officials said.

The interstate was shut down while law enforcement and paramedics responded to the scene. As of 9 a.m., officials said only the two left lanes were closed on the inner loop prior to East John Street while crews continued their investigation.
The interstate was fully reopened by 11 a.m.
No other information has been released.
