Mom charged with DWI in wreck that killed daughter

NEW BERN, N.C. — North Carolina troopers said a 24-year-old New Bern woman has been charged with driving while intoxicated in a crash that killed her 6-year-old daughter.

Authorities said Amber Sandvig crossed the center line Friday while driving near New Bern and hit an SUV head on.

Troopers said Sandvig's daughter was wearing a lap belt, but not the shoulder strap of her seat belt. She died a short time after the wreck at the hospital.

Authorities said Sandvig was taken by helicopter to a hospital. Prosecutors and troopers are considering additional charges. It isn't known if she has an attorney.

The driver of the SUV, her 32-year-old passenger and Sandvig's 2-year-old son also were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not known.
