CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In cheery pictures posted to Facebook, Daniella Villarreal seemed excited about becoming a new mother.
She recently posted a picture of the newborn in a cute little hat, but Tuesday around 4:30 a.m. police came to the north Charlotte apartment she lived in and found the little boy unresponsive.
The 3-week-old was rushed to the hospital, where he died.
After questioning the 17-year-old, police charged her with murder and felony child abuse. They said the baby was physically assaulted and that led to his death, but they wouldn't explain how.
"She doesn't understand why this would happen to her baby they looked very happy together," said Norma Zavala.
Zavala acted as a translator for Maria Aguilera. Aguilera said the teenager and her boyfriend moved in with her just a few months ago. They were friends of her family.
She said the baby was very ill at birth and was in and out of the hospital.
She woke up Tuesday to chaos.
"She was sleeping and she woke up with the sound of people inside her house and when she walked out her room, she saw the baby on the floor," said Zalvala.
