Mother wants to see change after son was killed in north Charlotte pedestrian crash

Keith Blanks

CHARLOTTE — Earlier this summer, 34-year-old Keith Blanks was killed while crossing a north Charlotte intersection on Statesville Road.

On Sunday, Okima Blanks went to the location where her son was killed in a pedestrian crash at the beginning of July.

Okima doesn’t want his death to be in vain, so she’s planning to lobby the city for a crosswalk that could get drivers to slow down and pay more attention to pedestrians.

“It has been treacherous for me. My son lived with me and so daily, it’s a struggle,” Okima said. “I oftentimes play in my mind that he is going to come home from work, but I know he’s not. But that’s how I make myself cope with the fact that my son is not here.”

Keith worked for Fed Ex. His mother told Channel 9 she has gotten a lot of support from his coworkers.

Police are still investigating the incident. No one has been charged in this case so far.
