SALISBURY, N.C. — More than 100 people finished an hours-long motorcycle starting and ending in Salisbury that raised money for medical costs for a 5-year-old girl.
Aubree has spent much of her life in the hospital with a rare liver disease called biliary atresia. After being on a transplant list for a year and a half, she received a liver about two weeks ago and is recovering in a Tennessee hospital.
The ride raised thousands of dollars in donations.
“The day of (the) transplant, (Abree) had a real yellowish green color to her,” said Jay Richardson, who owns Jaybird’s Custom Cycles in Salisbury and served in the military with Aubree’s father. “Now that she's got her liver, she's getting back to regular color again."
With the help of more than 100 motorcyclists, the family will be given thousands of dollars to get back on their feet.
“Just by what was put in the bucket this morning was $2,065,” said Jay Richardson, owner of JayBird Cycles. “It's really amazing what a group of people can do for another human being."
According to Aubree's family, the night after her transplant, her mother was robbed and carjacked at gunpoint in Memphis.
Friends said it came at a time the family is already stressed about medical bills and from being out of work to be by Aubree's side.
Organizers told Channel 9 that Aubree may get to go home from the hospital in the next few weeks.
“We're taking care of this family. It's veterans taking care of veterans,” motorcyclist Lawrence Bridge said.
