MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The next time you go to Myrtle Beach, you may not be allowed to smoke there.
Our news partner WPDE reported a city councilmember wants smoking banned on the beach, in public areas and city-owned properties.
Officials said Myrtle Beach police would be responsible for enforcing the ban and violators would face a find of up to $100. Vaping would not be included in the ban.
Council has not drafted an ordinance for this yet, but the city manager said no one’s against it.
The councilmember who proposed the ban, Jackie Hatley, said it was time to transition into the 21st century way of thinking and consider the risk of secondhand smoke.
“Everybody knows that smoking is bad for you, and inhaling secondhand smoke is bad for you,” she said during City Council’s monthly workshop meeting Thursday afternoon. “This is just a proactive way to protect our adults, children, pets, our citizens and our visitors.”
