NC group in mountains steps up to help animals impacted by Australian fires

WEAVERVILLE, N.C. — A group in North Carolina is doing what it can to help the billions of animals impacted by the fires in Australia, WLOS reported.

Officials said wildlife has been badly affected by the fires, with more than 1 billion animals possibly dead.

Grateful Threads is a group at the shop 5 Little Monkeys Quilt & Sew in Weaverville that has started sewing pouches together to help save baby kangaroos, wallabies, koalas and wombats.

Angie Lamoree with 5 Little Monkeys Quilt & Sew said she expects to have 40 to 50 pouches made in the next week.

“They’re easy to use up, especially flannel scraps,” Lamoree said. “They need to be natural fiber. They can’t be polyester or cheap, slippery stuff. It has to be good-quality fiber, which is what we have.”

The shop also said it is accepting cash donations to help buy food and medicine in Australia.

Lamoree said she will send boxes of pouches to Australia on Jan. 16 at her own expense.
