CONCORD, N.C. — Drivers in Concord said getting in and out of a construction area has been a confusing headache over the past few weeks. So they're hoping after this weekend their travel will be much smoother.
Beginning Friday morning, the Department of Transportation will shut down a stretch of N.C. Highway 73 over Interstate 85 while crews prepare to convert the intersection into a new diverging diamond.
That is part of a $125 million I-85 widening project.
Last month, the DOT opened the state's first diverging diamond at Poplar Tent Road and I-85.
One driver said he's ready for this project to be completed, but he's not thrilled he'll be forced to find a different route in the morning.
"That may not be good for me cause… so that means I'll probably have to drive all the way around," said Kyle O'Neill.
N.C. 73 at I-85 will shut down beginning at 9 a.m. Friday and will reopen at 6 a.m. Monday.
Detours will be posted west of I-85.
