HICKORY, N.C. — Several North Carolina Department of Transportation workers from the High Country were honored for saving the life of a coworker.
The NCDOT recognized the workers from Ashe County at the Board of Transportation meeting at the Hickory Metro Convention Center on Thursday morning.
They were working at a jobsite near Creston when one of the workers was stung by a bee and went into anaphylactic shock
His coworkers began driving him to the hospital, which was an hour away, after he lost consciousness. They also administered two epinephrine shots.
They were awarded the state’s Extra Mile Award.
If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here and I’m really grateful to have the team that I work with,” NCDOT worker Dane Miller said. “They saved my life.”
Miller said that he keeps nasal medication on him in case it ever happens again.
