Neighborhood calls emergency meeting about CMS' student assignment plan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Chantilly Neighborhood Association is among many groups calling emergency meetings since the proposed Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student assignment plan was rolled out Tuesday.

Chantilly students go to Oakhurst STEAM Academy.

Oakhurst students can currently move on to East Mecklenburg, Myers Park or Garinger high schools.

The new proposal would narrow that to just Garinger, while East Mecklenburg and Myers Park get “B” grades from the state.

Garinger has a “D” grade.

“By the time, hopefully, I’ll be able to pay for private school so I can avoid that issue,” said Mark Loft, whose child attends Oakhurst.

Student feeding patterns are a big part of the changes.

Oakdale Elementary School students who go to Ranson Middle School would shift from West Mecklenburg to West Charlotte High School, going from a “D” performance school to a “C” performance.

Superintendent Ann Clark said there's good reason for each shift.

“Whether it was over capacity, or whether it was long bus rides for the students, or whether they had a split feeder pattern,” Clark said.

If the plan is approved, it won't go into effect until the 2018-2019 school year.

The district plans to have maps detailing the neighborhoods directly impacted by next Monday.

That will kick off the district's first community meeting, which will run through May 22. There will be two public hearings, May 9 and May 23.

The board will vote on the changes on May 24.
