Neighbors look for ways to help injured black bear spotted in apartment complex

BOONE, N.C. — Neighbors in Boone are trying to help a black bear after spotting the animal outside their apartment complex.

The bear is estimated to weigh about 125 pounds.

The animal has been seen several times at the Bloomfield Apartments off Highway 321. Residents shared a video of the bear with Channel 9′s Dave Faherty, and they said the bear was limping and may have hurt its leg.

They have asked a conservancy group to set up a camera to learn more about the animal.

“His back right leg appears to be missing his paw,” resident Samantha Yopp said. “We didn’t really get so close.”

“It’s a little scary, but I don’t know, it kind of puts you in your place,” resident Augusta Nichols said.

Neighbors said the complex is looking at purchasing a bear-proof dumpster to keep the bear, and others, out of the area.
