New community hub in historic West End debuts after years of hurdles

CHARLOTTE — After years of planning, millions of dollars and construction delays, Five Points Plaza in Charlotte’s historic West End is finally complete.

The new public gathering space was celebrated Saturday morning with a grand opening attended by city leaders.

“As a gateway to the Beatties Ford Road and Rozzelles Ferry Road Corridor of Opportunity, the plaza is a key center of activity that is ideal for a beautiful community gathering spot,” Mayor Vi Lyles told the media at the opening festivities.

The space includes a stage for live performances, swings and a splashpad for warm summer days.

“We’re in a better place as it relates to the pandemic and this neighborhood has been hit hard from a health perspective, so we need these places and this time to celebrate and reconnect with our neighbors,” said Charles Thomas, Charlotte program director for Knight Foundation.
