New development proposed in Huntersville neighborhood

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Plans to develop a grocery store on property off Huntersville-Concord Road could soon change a quaint Huntersville neighborhood into the new town center.

The project caught people in the neighborhood off guard.

"I'm shocked, really, that they're going to try to put all of that right there," said Stanley Carter, who lives in the Vermillion neighborhood.

Vermillion is right across the street from the proposed Anchor Mill development.

"It can't fit. It's going to be too congested,” Carter said. “The traffic is going to be out of this world.”

The proposal includes apartments, townhomes and a 78,000-square foot grocery store.

Huntersville Mayor John Anaralla believes that having a place to shop on that side of the interstate will ease traffic for neighbors who shop at stores on the other side of town.

"So instead of people traveling across the interstate to go shopping or go to the supermarket or even go out to dinner, this will provide a place for the people on the east side to go to and congregate," Anaralla said.

Anaralla said there will be a traffic impact analysis on the roads affected by Anchor Mill, including Huntersville-Concord Road, with recommendations for the extra traffic.

"I would actually think Vermillion people would be excited because they can actually walk there,” Anaralla said.

Carter said convenience isn't his priority.

"I didn't move here to be living across from all of that,” he said.

The Huntersville Planning Board will consider the rezoning request on Tuesday. Residents can weigh in at a public hearing on May 1.
