Charlotte City Council unanimously approved a new grocery store to be built near the Arboretum shopping center at the corner of Pineville-Matthews and Providence roads.
More than 300 residents signed a petition opposing the store.
Residents were disappointed their concerns about traffic did not lead to the project's rejection
“There are plenty of areas in the city that could use this project,” resident Meryl Hunte said. “It's not south Charlotte and it's not the Arboretum."
Officials said the new grocery store will likely be a Publix. Residents said that it is not needed because there are 20 other supermarkets within a 4-mile radius.
