CHARLOTTE, N.C. — American Airlines and US Airways are racing toward an agreement to merge operations into what would become the world's biggest airline.
Sources close to the negotiations said the two airlines are working out final details but warn the situation is "still fluid" and could change.
According to those sources, the new airline would take the American Airlines name and be headquartered in American's home base in Dallas.
Leadership of the new management team is still unclear. Insiders believe US Airways CEO Doug Parker has the inside track.
For Charlotte, the merger could make the city's airport even more prominent.
"I think our biggest opportunity is east access to international routes, particularly to South America and Central America," said airport director Jerry Orr.
Others believe the merged airline will help solidify the airports status as a major hub for the Southeast, especially since the two airlines' routes overlap in few areas.
"Chances are Charlotte will become 'the' hub for the Southeast," said economist John Connaughton.
The negotiations between the two airlines could lead to their boards of directors voting on a deal on Monday. An announcement of a merger could come as soon as Tuesday.
Even if the airlines agree, there are still hurdles to overcome. Regulators have to approve any airline mergers. A bankruptcy judge will also have to approve any deal as part of American Airlines' emergency from bankruptcy protection.
