New inspection report shows improved sanitation grades at Spectrum Center

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new Mecklenburg County health inspection was conducted at the Spectrum Center on Wednesday, days after a report saying that the uptown Charlotte venue was one of the worst places to eat in professional sports was released.

The new report shows that eight concession stands received "A" grades.

Past coverage:

“I heard about the recent low grades but I think their food is really good,” Hornets fan Dave Kulp said.

When Channel 9 went through the new reports, it found that only two concession stands inspected received critical violations.

At Center City Grill, an inspector "observed employee entering kitchen, touching face and hat without washing hands before handling pizza screens.”

At the Papa John's Pizza, a public health form was filled out incorrectly.

An inspector noted, "Provide and follow written procedures for foods held using time as a public health control (tphc). Clearly mark foods with begin and end times. All food not sold by the end of four hours shall be discarded. Observed TPHC form filled out incorrectly. Started inspection at 5:50 and start time on form was 6 p.m. Must fill out with accurate times.”

Minor points were docked for other concession stands for food debris that had built up on surfaces and shelves, food equipment stored under a hand sink sewer line and a cracked ice scoop.

"It is something that can be fixed,” fan Jeremy Alston said. “I know a lot of people are real big into health issues. If it’s a big problem, it will get fixed."

A week ago, ESPN listed the Spectrum Center as the worst sports arena in the nation for health code violations.

Reports showed more than 180 critical violations at all 19 food stands since 2016.

Inspectors found beer leaking from the ceiling, a bartender touching a lime with bare hands and an employee not washing their hands before putting on gloves.

Those food stands weren't part of the inspection on Wednesday.
