New program offers training for women interested in construction industry

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In every industry across the board, there’s a shortage of workers and a need to fill jobs, but there’s one industry in particular that’s seeing a different kind of shortage -- a shortage of women.

Since 2019, meeting the construction workforce demand has been the work of the Goodwill Construction Skills Training Center. It offers classes including core construction, electrical, HVAC, and now for the first time, one program just for women.

“This time around, we wanted to do something special and unique. We felt like there was a demand,” said Verona Hendrix, Goodwill career navigator.

The training is free and is made possible, in part, thanks to a grant from the city of Charlotte and donations to your local Goodwill stores.

>> In the video at the top of the page, Channel 9′s DaShawn Brown explains how the city of Charlotte is trying to build more construction careers for women.
