Nurse helps unresponsive woman in Union County; son performs with Keith Urban on same day

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A nurse passing by and a Union County deputy came to the rescue of a woman having a cardiac arrest on the side of the road in Union County on Saturday.

When Union County Deputy Michael Malloy arrived at the scene on NC 218 and Sikes Mill Road in Monroe, he found a man standing over an unresponsive female.

Grace Moran-Hanna, a registered nurse from Myrtle Beach, happened to drive by on her way to a Keith Urban concert at PNC Music Pavilion with her teenage son.

She checked for a pulse, but did not find one.

"I had him lay her on the ground and started asking questions, but you could clearly see she wasn't breathing," Moran-Hanna said.

She conducted chest compressions while Malloy grabbed a portable AED from his patrol vehicle.

Malloy applied the pads and the AED administered the first shock before paramedics and first responders arrived.

"It made the difference of getting her heart started again, the AED 100 percent was what saved her," Moran-Hanna said.

Deputies said the woman was breathing on her own, but was still unresponsive when paramedics took her to the hospital.

The woman and her two sons were on the way to Myrtle Beach from Hickory and were driving through Union County when she became “stiff,” according to her 18-year-old son, who was driving the car and calling 911 for help, according to deputies.

The patient remains hospitalized and is continuing to recover.

This moment was not the only amazing moment for the Moran-Hanna and her son.

Moran-Hanna said her son, Noah, held up a sign at the Keith Urban concert that read, “Can I play your guitar?”

Urban saw the sign and invited him on stage to play in front of the crowd.

Hanna said her son wants to be a musician.
