Wingate police officer injured during traffic stop

WINGATE, N.C. — A Wingate police officer is recovering Saturday after a driver hit him while he was conducting a traffic stop.

The Wingate Police Department is reminding drivers on social media to move over or slow down when they pass an officer on the side of the road.

Officials said the officer will be OK.

The police department said in a statement on Facebook:

"Just a friendly PSA: Law enforcement officers  out on the highways and roads often try to make  traffic stops in parking lots where it is safer and out of traffic. When drivers stop on the highway or streets, please move over or decrease your speed significantly. I have an officer laying in the hospital, whose vehicle was was struck by a motorist who failed to move over this afternoon. Keep him in your thoughts and we appreciate the help from UCSO, Wingate Fire, EMS, and Marshville Police Department.

He will recover but most likely will be very sore for a couple days."
