Officer hurt in ambush on law enforcement in York Co. accidentally shot by SWAT, officials say

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Channel 9 has learned one of three officers injured in an ambush on law enforcement officers in York County in January was accidentally shot by a member of the SWAT team.

The sheriff said the only gun that could not be eliminated in the shooting of Officer Kyle Cummings was the rifle used by SWAT team member Lt. J.M. Ligon.

Cummings was one of three officers who were shot during a manhunt for domestic violence suspect Christian McCall. McCall opened fire on law enforcement officers.

Officials believe Ligon accidentally shot Cummings as two teams of officers were closing in on the suspect.

"While it is likely that the shot that wounded Sergeant Cummings was fired by Lieutenant Ligon, the ultimate responsibility for the attempted murder of Sergeant Cummings rests with Christian Thomas McCall," Sheriff Kevin Tolson said.

Last month McCall was sentenced to life in prison for the ambush that killed Detective Mike Doty.
