Authorities identify man killed in officer-involved shooting in Indian Land

INDIAN LAND, S.C. — The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office has identified 27-year-old Derrick Clinton II as the man that was shot and killed by a deputy in Indian Land Friday night.

The South Carolina Department Law Enforcement Division said a Lancaster County deputy was shot and an armed suspect was killed after gunfire was exchanged.

The shooting happened at the Court at Red Stone apartment complex off U.S. 521 at Highway 160.

Deputies were serving a search warrant at a residence connected to welfare check on a missing persons case.

Deputies entered the apartment without force and the man reported missing fired at them. Deputies returned fire, striking the man who died at the scene.

The injured deputy was taken to a hospital, but is expected to be OK.

No other injuries have been reported.

SLED is conducting the ongoing investigation at the request of the sheriff’s office.

The incident in Lancaster County was the 30th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2021, SLED stated.

In 2020, there were 49 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina; one involved the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.
