9-year-old boy killed in jet ski accident on Lake Norman

Eyewitness News learned more information Friday about a jet ski accident that killed a 9-year-old boy Thursday on Lake Norman.

Neighbors who live near the accident scene said the boy was visiting his grandparents and had spent the past few days having fun on the water with his sisters.

All of that changed around 4 p.m. Thursday.

"I was in the house and I heard a large crash and then I heard my neighbor Bob screaming to 'help them, help the kids,'" said neighbor Tom Curtis.

Curtis said he immediately grabbed his neighbor, jumped in his boat and rushed out to help.

As he got closer he said he realized his neighbor's grandkids had been in a tragic accident.

Investigators said that 9-year-old boy was on a jet ski driven by a 15-year-old girl.

It came to a stop, but for some reason, another jet ski carrying two other children plowed into it. Officers said the little boy had head injuries.

"The boy was not responsive at all, at that point, the girl was quite hysterical," Curtis said.

A pontoon boater saw the accident and rushed the kids to the nearest dock, at a camp for the blind.

The camp's director said some of her counselors performed CPR on the boy.

However, officers said the boy died at the hospital.

Curtis said the 15-year old girl was still in the hospital Friday, but officers couldn't confirm that to Channel 9.

They said the two teenage girls met all the requirements to drive those jet skis and all the kids were wearing life jackets.

It's not likely the guardians will face any charges.
