Officials prep for big crowds near new outlet mall

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police in Charlotte's Steele Creek are working extra hard to make sure a traffic nightmare doesn't happen again in a couple weeks when holiday shopping begins at the outlets.

Cars overflowed into neighborhoods on Charlotte Premium Outlets' opening days in the summer and now police are beefing up their plan so shoppers don't bombard local streets.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Charlotte Department of Transportation will block access to area neighborhoods by creating soft barriers or signage on the main street into the Briarwood community to alleviate some of the issues.

"We'll be providing additional officers to check and make sure that cars aren't being illegally parked on personal property or private property or illegally on the streets," said Capt. Chris Dozier.

They'll also have additional traffic control in and around the mall off the interstates.

The main goal is to make sure it's as safe as possible for shoppers braving the crowds on Black Friday.
