CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Matthew Wykoff is an ACTE technology education teacher at Olympic High School in Charlotte.
Each semester, he challenges his students to come up with a design and prototype that addresses a current need.
Before he could do that this year, the stay-at-home order was issued, but he’s still doing it while his students are apart.

“I just keep seeing more and more nurses within my personal network on Facebook. They’re just so scared because they’re saying that they do not have this PPE (personal protective equipment) at their work,” said Wykoff.
Wykoff decided to tackle face shields. He’s personally built at least 120 face shields in his garage for health care workers, and his students are providing feedback and helping with the design.
“This is an opportunity to inspire them, to apply what they know and help others with their skills and knowledge,” said Wykoff.
Currently, they’re not considered approved personal protective gear, but he wants health care professionals to know that they’re here if they want to use them until approved gear becomes available.
