Teen shot, killed in city's 5th homicide in a week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police worked their fifth homicide in the past seven days on Sunday.

Police said around 12:15 a.m. Sunday, bullets hit three teenagers after a house party in the Bristol Farms subdivision in east Charlotte.

Kevin Washington died following the shooting on Timbertop Lane, police said.

"He was just the one in the family that just kept us together and always had a smile on his face," said Washington's sister Kenya Blandon.

Hours after her brother died, she was in the neighborhood looking for answers. She said Washington was at a party Sunday night.

"I know somebody know something, just cause there were so many people around," said Blandon.

Neighbors said nearly 100 people were there and police said, at one point, a fight between two groups broke out.

Around midnight gunshots erupted outside of the house and neighbors said dozens of young people scattered.  Police arrived and found 18-year-old Garrett Hall shot in the leg, 18-year-old Tevin Horton shot in the arm and Washington shot to death.

The shooting left its mark on the neighborhood. Many were too scared to talk on camera. Some neighbors said they thought the incident was gang related.

Eyewitness News asked Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police if it was. They didn't respond Sunday night, but they did say earlier in the day that their gang unit helped investigate the crime.

Blandon said she hoped that someone would speak up for her brother's sake.

"If anybody know something, just think if it were your brother or, your loved one."

Washington's sister said he was a graduate of Butler High School and had dreams of playing college football.

Police haven't said whether they have any leads in the case.
